With the onset of winter cold, every commercial vehicle owner faces the challenges posed by extremely low temperatures. When temperatures drop below freezing, it becomes crucial to install reliable heating systems to ensure the vehicle operates effectively and to maintain the comfort of the driver and passengers.
However, the large volume of the double-cab in the JAC light commercial vehicle and the characteristics of diesel engines mean that the standard heating system may not be sufficient in severe frosts. That is why our client chose the optimal solution of retrofitting the JAC truck with a combination of the Webasto Thermo Top Evo autonomous liquid heater and the Webasto Air Top 2000 STC air heater.
1. Webasto Thermo Top Evo liquid heater
A Thermo Top Evo pre-heater (12V / 4.0 kW) was installed for pre-start engine warming during the cold season.
Installation and operation features:
The Webasto Thermo Top Evo liquid heater is integrated into the engine compartment and connected to the engine cooling system. Thanks to a special fuel pump, the system draws fuel directly from the JAC’s standard fuel tank and operates completely autonomously, without requiring the vehicle’s engine to be started. For the most convenient and precise control of the process, we have installed a MultiControl digital timer, which allows you to easily programme heating modes and prepare the vehicle for departure in advance.
The Thermo Top heater heats the coolant (antifreeze) and circulates it through the engine circuit. Why is this important? You avoid a ‘cold start’, which, in terms of engine wear, is equivalent to several hundred kilometres of driving.
2. Air Top 2000 STC air heater
To maintain a stable temperature in the cabin during long stops, parking or when passengers remain in the cabin for extended periods with the main engine off, an autonomous Air Top 2000 STC air heater (12V / 2.0 kW) has been installed. The Air Top 2000 STC operates on the same principle as a hairdryer: it draws air from the cabin, heats it and blows it back inside.
Installation and operation features:
The air heater is mounted inside the cab in strict compliance with Webasto standards: the unit operates in recirculation mode, and all technical openings for air intake, exhaust and the fuel line are securely sealed. The installation takes into account the space required for future servicing. The system is fuelled directly from the vehicle’s fuel tank via an independent metering pump. A mechanical control knob is fitted to the dashboard, allowing the driver to smoothly adjust the heating output. A key advantage of this system is the ability to use it safely throughout the night without starting the engine and without the risk of draining the battery, ensuring ideal climate control during long stops.
Fitting a combined system (Thermo Top Evo liquid heater + Air Top 2000 air heater) to a JAC N56DC with a double-cab is the gold standard for winterising a commercial vehicle. This guarantees that your vehicle will start in any frost, and that the six-person crew will work in comfortable conditions.
